Sixteen coats, and each one must dry before the next. The work cannot be hurried, which is the first thing he tells anyone who asks to film it.

He learned the trade from his father, in the room he still works in — the resin from the same hills, the brushes worn to the shape of his hand. Thirty years have settled the sequence into ritual: coat, rest, polish, rest again. On humid days the lacquer takes longer, and he lets it. The finish that results cannot be counterfeited by anything faster.

You cannot hurry the drying. The material decides, not the maker.
